Navratri Day 9 Goddess: Who is Maa Siddhidatri?

Maa Siddhidatri is revered as the goddess who blesses her devotees with supernatural abilities known as Siddhis. According to sacred Hindu texts like the Devi Bhagavata Purana and the Markandeya Purana, Maa Siddhidatri possesses eight Siddhis: Anima (reducing one’s body size), Mahima (expanding one's form), Garima (becoming heavy), Laghima (becoming weightless), Prapti (obtaining anything desired), Prakamya (fulfilling desires), Ishatva (ruling over nature), and Vashitva (controlling others). By worshipping her with pure devotion, devotees can experience a heightened spiritual state, where worldly limitations dissolve, and divine knowledge manifests.

Maa Siddhidatri is also mentioned in the Skanda Purana, stating that she helped Lord Shiva acquire his divine powers. In this form, she sits on a lotus or rides a lion, and her presence is majestic and compassionate. She holds a lotus, mace, Sudarshan Chakra, and conch shell—each symbolizing cosmic power, destruction of evil, and the purity of the soul.

Maa Siddhidatri is the ninth and final manifestation of Goddess Durga. Her name is derived from two Sanskrit words: 'Siddhi' meaning perfection, accomplishment, or supernatural power, and 'Datri' meaning giver. Thus, Siddhidatri is revered as the bestower of all divine perfections and supernatural powers.

The Devi Bhagavata Purana describes her as:
"सिद्धिदात्री महादेवी सर्वसिद्धिप्रदायिनी। सर्वसिद्धिमयी देवी सर्वसिद्धिस्वरूपिणी॥" (Siddhidatri, the Great Goddess, bestower of all perfections, The Goddess who embodies all accomplishments, the very form of all supernatural powers.)

Navratri Day 9 Goddess: Origin of Maa Siddhidatri in Hindu Scriptures

Maa Siddhidatri's origins are elaborately described in the Devi Bhagavata Purana and Brahmavaivarta Purana. She is said to have appeared from the left half of Lord Shiva to fulfil the divine purpose of creation. It was Maa Siddhidatri who bestowed Siddhis not only upon humans but also on gods, saints, and even demons. Her name, which means "the giver of supernatural powers," reflects her role in empowering both the divine and mortal realms.

One popular story from the scriptures narrates how Lord Shiva, with the blessings of Maa Siddhidatri, acquired the Ardhanarishvara form—a half-male and half-female deity symbolising the balance of masculine and feminine energies. This union signifies the oneness of the universe and the interconnectedness of creation.

The Skanda Purana narrates the origin of Maa Siddhidatri. According to this ancient text, at the beginning of creation, Lord Rudra (a form of Shiva) worshipped the unmanifest Adi Parashakti. Pleased with his devotion, the Goddess appeared before him in the form of Siddhidatri. It is said that Lord Shiva received all the Siddhis (supernatural powers) from her, and half of his body became that of Goddess Siddhidatri, forming Ardhanarishvara.

"रुद्रस्य तपसा तुष्टा आविर्भूता महेश्वरी। सिद्धिदात्री स्वरूपेण ददौ सिद्धीः समस्तकाः॥" (Pleased by Rudra's penance, the Great Goddess manifested, In the form of Siddhidatri, she bestowed all perfections.)

After Lord Rudra received all Siddhis from Maa Siddhidatri, he realized the importance of the divine feminine power. In a moment of profound spiritual union, half of Rudra's body merged with Siddhidatri, creating the Ardhanarishvara form.

"अर्धं शरीरं या देवी ददौ शम्भोर्महात्मनः। अर्धनारीश्वरं रूपं तेन सा प्रथिता भुवि॥"
(The Goddess who gave half her body to the great Shambhu, By that act, she became renowned on earth as Ardhanarishvara.)

According to this lesser-known version, when Mahishasura was on the brink of defeat, he tried to use his shape-shifting abilities to escape. Siddhidatri, with her power over all Siddhis, nullified mahishasura's shape-shifting ability:

"महिषस्य महामाया सिद्धिदात्र्या विनाशिता। स्थिरीकृतं च तद्रूपं येन देव्या स घातितः॥"
(The great illusion of Mahisha was destroyed by Siddhidatri, His form was stabilized, by which the Goddess slew him.)

This tale highlights Siddhidatri's power to counter even the most potent supernatural abilities when used for adharmic purposes.

Navratri Day 9 Stories: The Enlightenment of Markandeyae

The sage Markandeya, known for his devotion to Shiva, once sought to understand the nature of Maya (cosmic illusion). He performed intense tapasya (penance) to gain this knowledge. Pleased with his dedication, Maa Siddhidatri appeared before him.

"मार्कण्डेयं महायोगी सिद्धिदात्री स्वयं ददौ। मायाज्ञानं परं दिव्यं येन मुक्तोऽभवद् द्विजः॥"
(To Markandeya, the great yogi, Siddhidatri herself gave, The supreme divine knowledge of Maya, by which the twice-born became liberated.)

She granted him the Siddhi of true wisdom, allowing him to perceive the illusory nature of the material world while remaining anchored in divine consciousness. This story illustrates Siddhidatri's role as a bestower of spiritual enlightenment.
